Data Erasure – what is it and why is it important?

Deleting files and data from a computer or device seems like the easiest action to take, but when you empty your recycle bin are you really erasing your data from your computer/device? The answer is no.

When you delete a file from your computer or laptop you are only deleting its reference so that the computer itself cannot locate it anymore, but the data is still there! It’s like deleting the index of a book without deleting the actual book. You are deleting the number of the pages but not the content.

Can deleted data be recovered? Yes, it can and it’s quite easy to do by using the right software. This puts your data at risk, and your organisation could face compliance and security threats.

The way you delete data can impact your organisation in different ways. From a risk point of view, if you have only deleted data and not erased it, then it is recoverable, it can be accessed and someone else can use it – 65% of leaks are from malicious insider attacks, just so you know!

From a compliance point of view, there are currently 111 data protection regulations and your organisation needs to be compliant with most if not all of them.  For example, with GDPR, people have the right to be forgotten, meaning they can request for their data to be erased permanently. If their data is not erased and is only deleted and therefore still stored somewhere in your device, then your organisation is not GDPR compliant.

There is also the cost of storing data to consider. Storing unnecessary data is costly and most of the time the actual data stored is not critical to the organisation. Studies show that 85% of stored data is dark, redundant, obsolete or trivial – meaning that it can be erased!

A data erasure solution like Blancco, allows you to prevent and mitigate the risk of data breaches, reach compliance with data protection regulation such as GDPR, enforce data retention policies by proper sanitization and significantly reduce data storage costs.
